The Sikh Temple admist Bangkok China Town

Venue: Guru Tawan, Phra Nakhon DistrictThe grand building at the heart of Phahurat is the spiritual and religious center of the Sikh Thais. The word “Guru Tawan” means the way to ‘guru’ which signifies the ten founders of the Sikh religion including Guru-Khrunt Sahib, the Sikh scriptures. The six storied building is topped with a golden dome. The congregation hall for religious function is located on the 4th floor. The international school is on the 5th . The highest floor houses the scripture archives and reading hall.A familiar sight at this sacred place is the congregation of the Sikh men with long beard in turbans, and the women in traditional Indian costume with had shawls, praying and listening to the teaching fromthe scriptures. For a non-Sikh,such a serene atmosphere seems surreal but impressive.Although the Guru Tawan is open to all. Visitors should conduct themselves in arespecful manner as appropriate to a religious place.
Touring Little India to Experience the Indian Ways In this narrow lane of 300 meters long by Chakaphet Rd. Next to The ATM Phahurat Store (under demolition after a fire) nestles the area known as Little India. The sense and the smell permeating from this side street foretells its existence. Passers-by also provide a good backdrop of the area. The atmosphere invokes curiosity. The merchandise on display along the lane is quite interesting. There are strange-looking desserts, snacks, instant noodles, sari materials, embroidered fabrics, wrist-rings encrusted with colr mirrors, Indian slippers, incense sticks, myrrh, and other dedication objects believed to appease god and goddesses. All are imported from India. A stop by this area will convince visitors thatit is actually as interesting as the nearby Chinatown

Venue: Wat Pathum Khongkha, Samphanthawong District
In the olden days, after a royal cremation, the ashes would be taken in a boat procession to float before Wat Phathum Khongkha. If a royal white elephant died, its bones wrapped in white cloth would be treated likewise.
This temple was also an execution field for members of the royal family in the early Rattanakosin Period, as evident in the existent 48-by-60-inch execution stone on which several royal-family members were executed from the First to the Third Reigns. The guilty person would be put in a red sack and beaten to death with a fragrant sandalwood club.

Venue: Holy Rosary Church, Samphanthawong District
Located on the riverbank next to Kularb Witthaya School amidst the Chinese community in Talat Noi, This Gothic church was initially built by the Portuguese settlers from the Kudi Chin community on the Thonburi side.
However, most of later temple patrons were the Chinese Christian in the area. The temple was named Kalawar after the mountain Kalawario on which Jesus had allegedly been crucified. The king generously granted the land for its construction in 1786.
The now-standing church is the third building between 1891 and 1898 in the Fifth Reign. It is in the much-favored Franco-gothic style with a high steeple and pointed arch portals and windows. The stained-glass windows depict biblical stories. The high pointed fa?ade is decorated with a cross

Venue: Wat Suwannaram Bangkok Noi District
The legendary competing master painters, Master Thongyu (Luang Wichit Chetsada) and Master Khong Pae (Luang Seni Borirak), have left their masterpieces on the western mural of Wat Suwannaram
Formally called Wat Thong since the Ayutthaya Period, the temple was entirely renovated in the First Reign. The masterpieces of the two masters are thus in good condition, considered a rare and notable heritage. Master Thongyu painted the story of Nemirat, and Master Khong Pae the Mahosot. Master Thongyu’s style was typically Thai, with elaborated details and lining accentuation in red, blue, and brown. Master Khong Pae, in contrast, painted troops of Thais, Chinese, and Westerners.
In addition to the murals, the congregation hall is intriguing as well. The gable is a wonderful woodwork in the motif of god Narayana atop a garuda surrouded by angelic hosts.

Venue : Wat Suwannaram Market, Bangkok Noi District
Locally known as Talat Wat Thong behind the Bangkok Noi District Office, the old market has been here to serve the community for been than 100 years.
Old-timers related that initially this wooden market roofed with napa was on the riverbank near the community’s congregation hall. It was moved to the present location in 1924. The market is still in operation now. It is open from dawn till dusk. The evening business is more lucrative. However, the merchandise is not varied and business is not as healthy as it used to be because there are now several markets in the area.

The distinctive feature of this market is its building which is a huge structure with wooden posts. The whole building is divided into alleviated stalls for vendors. The roof-supporting structure sits on rows of unique arch beams from one side of the posts to the opposite side, along the length of the building. On close looking, it is evident that the arches are made up from small wooden pieces joined together with metal pins. The joining has expertly been done to create an arch effect to support the roof with no beams. This reflects superb and elaborate craftsmanship of the master builder. This arch support provides not only unique beauty but also additional space and airy effect.

Venue: Wat Amarinthraram, Bangkok Noi District
Formerly called Wat Bang Wa Noi, this ancient temple was renovated by the Viceroy, Prince Bowonsathan Phimuk, in the First Reign. The king renamed it “Wat Amarinthraram
It has flourished for more than a hundred years until towards the end of WW II. The allies bombarded the nearby train station into smithereens, to cut off the Japanese transport of war supplies. The temple was also razed. The small image hall with a beautiful Ayutthaya image inside was miraculously intact. The image locally called “Luangpho Bot Noi” (The image of the small hall), was believed to have saved the hall with its magical sacredness. People still come to pay homage to this revered image.

Venue: Wat Rakhang Khositaram, Bangkok Noi District
In the Ayutthaya Period, Wat Rakhang Khositaram was the residence of the much revered intellectual patriarch (Si), who has an authority in the Tri-Pitaka and meditation.
Rama I thus intended to renovate the temple to restore its grandeur. The original resident hall and the reception hall were removed to be rebuilt near the image hall, to serve as the scripture halls. Along the borders were decked with blessing angels at intervals. Inside are murals painted on teak panels. The south portals are decorated with traditional scroll patterns. The eastern portal of the middle room and the balcony gates are woodcarving. The big scripture cabinets belonging to the Ayutthaya Period stand in the sleeping chamber and the reception hall. The traditional motif and the carving are believed to be the artwork of Rama II (then Prince Itsara Sunthon) and a woodcarving master from Ayutthaya.

temples and traditions

Bangkok’s temples are a unique part of the capital’s heart and soul. The architecture is inspiring and glittering decoration is stunning.

Constructed in 1899 byKing Rama V, its walls are covered with Carrara marble from Italy.

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, located ina separate complex within the compound of theGrand Palace, is Thailand’s holiest shrine. Offi ciallynamed Wat Phra Si Rattanasatsadaram, the temple complex was modeled on the temples of the Sukhothai and Ayuttaya eras. Even though small in size, the Emerald Buddha is considered one of the most important icons for Thai people. The sacred Buddha was fi rst brought to Thonburi, currently the west side of Bangkok, by King Taksin the Great. In 1784, King Rama I moved the statue to the current location in Bangkok. It should be pointed out that the Emerald Buddha is in reality carved from a large piece of green jade. The word in Thai for emerald means “green colored”.

This famous Chao Phraya riverbank landmark, located diagonally oppositethe Grand Palace, is best known for a porcelain encrusted 79 meter central pagoda (phra prang), which sparkles in the sun. The temple can be reached either by Arun Amarin Road or by boat from Tha Tien Pier near Wat Pho.

This large and extensive temple neighbors theGrand Palace enclave on Thai Wang Road andcontains a gigantic gold plated reclining Buddhasome 46 meters long and 15 meters high, with inlaidmother of pearl soles.

Wat Saket’s major feature is the Golden Mount, dating from the mid 19th century. It is an artifi cial hill topped by agilded pagoda, which is 260 feet in height. Begun by King Rama III and completed in the reign of King Rama IV, the golden mountain is one of the most celebrated landmarks in Bangkok’s old area. The golden Chedi houses relics of the Buddha and affords visitors who climb its 318steps a panoramic view of Bangkok from the top.
